Animal Testing: Did You Know…?

Pretty much everyone knows that medicine and cosmetics are tested on animals. But did you know that pet food, household products or tobacco are tested on animals too? (Sources: PETA, API and Smokinganimals.com)

These are only examples of the many unexpected products that are tested on animals. Is it really necessary to test these products on animals?

No, and it is even harder to defend animal testing on these products than it is to defend animal testing of medicine.

Phillip & Morris KillsAnyway, household products and tobacco are not necessary to survive (even if the tobacco companies would certainly be more than happy to give that picture that tobacco is good for health and will make you live longer), so it can’t be argued either that animal testing and research is absolutely necessary for the survival of certain persons.

Furthermore, even if all new household products, pet food and tobacco brands should be tested on animals for some reason, do we really need new products? Can’t we manage to choose between the dozen different laundry powders, the dozen different dog or cat food cans or the dozen different tobacco brands that exist already?

As there are a lot of ingredients already used that are known as safe, we don’t need to test new ingredients any more.

It’s time to stop animal testing. For an older post on animal testing check this link.

You said, “…do we really need new products?”

Yes, a thousand times yes. Would you really want to use detergents and household products designed in the 1930’s? Of course not! They probably contain asbestos and lead! Its a good thing we did long term testing (likely on animals) to find out not to use those anymore!

“…there are a lot of ingredients already used that are known as safe…”

Sure there millions of safe products out there. But, lucky for us there are scientists in laboratories constantly finding out new knowledge/materials that may make our lives better. — To find out if its deadly to us, we go and test it on animals first…

I don’t know, would you prefer, human testing?

Test on humans? That’s easy to say, not easy to do.
Both testing on humans and animals are wrong.

    Kate: better place?! What?
How does animal testing make the world a better place?
    That doesn’t make any sense = =”

Animals testing is not necessary. The person who said that it is is stupid. And we have new CRAB?? in our live, thanks to those pooe creatures who were tortured! Hopefully those animals that are dead from testing hunt you and take it out on you! How would you like to be tested on, huh? Yeah, I didn’t think so! So be grateful for htose animals that died for you own CRAB (AGAIN??) stuff!

Haha even the revision barely any makes any sense.

Animal testing is not necessary and to all dumb asses saying testing on animals is ok, YOU GET TESTED ON, other wise no animals should be tested. That includes us humans because we are animals if all you dumb asses haven’t realized. Anyways, we have newer and better technology that costs less, gives more accurate data and takes up less time than to test on animals, but places STILL test on these defenceless creatures that cannot speak like we do!

We have a voice to stop it! They don’t. Help them with a voice. STOP IT.

Even though we have this technology and they test on animals, it’s just retarded.

CONCLUSION: Most of mankind is pathetic, and I hate being a part of it. Congrats to those who are trying to stop it!

Here’s my website to help stop animal testing, it’s just being started but hey. Pretty soon it shall be better. http://www.EndAnimalTesting-NOW.piczo.com

  16. Matt on 27 Sep 2008 at 1:05 #

If there were cheaper technology that gave more accurate results in a quicker time than animals - and really worked - don’t you think they would have swiched over by now? You actually believe that they test on animals just to be cruel? Those scientists are pretty smart, and if there were a way they could get more accurate results for all the work they do - and at a cheaper price - they certainly would have jumped all over it! Now I know newer technology is out there, and I’m sure they use it when they can. But really the only way to do real research or test a cure is to do it on life.

Do you not care about the advancements in human medicine and the lives that have been saved? I hope you refuse taking any medication when you’re sick or go to the doctor. If you don’t refuse it, then you are a hypocrite because animal testing is the reason those medicines are out there to help us.

animal testing for household products and things such as tobacco is unnecessary. although i agree that animal testing is ok when research into medicine, these product that are not necessary for our survival. I don’t believe that scientists are just subjecting animals to cruelty for no reason at all, but i think they are disrespecting the animals rights, as the results of the tests will not justify the tests.

If every nonhuman animal species never or rarely reacted the same way as humans, or, conversely, if they always or almost always reacted the same way as humans, they might be useful. But since animals react in the same way as humans in an unreliable, unpredictable manner, animals are dangerous models for humans. Moreover, it is impossible to know which animal will respond in the same way a human does until it is known how a human responds. It is knowledge after the fact—redundant, and therefore useless.

  22. rebecca thornton on 16 Feb 2009 at 4:28 #

animal testing is the wrong thing to do. There is other ways that we can test the products without hurting the animals and i dont care if they test medicine it still wrong. they feel pain and when they feel pain i feel pain.

  23. priya Vijayan on 16 Feb 2009 at 4:31 #

Its wrong and cruel to exploit animals in labs. Say no to animal cruelty.

  24. sophia on 20 Feb 2009 at 22:07 #

to be honest if you want to use animal tested products then you might aswell kill 10,000 dogs, cats and rabbits because you are the reason why people are killing them!!!

  27. livi on 21 Mar 2009 at 20:30 #

i think that animal testing is absolutely wrong because the people that do it dont give a damn about what happens to the animals at all! thats cruel because actually we are a type of animal and you wouldnt want the other animals to test on you would you? If you were a rat(or any other ones the idiots test on) you would hate it and i hope people realise its not good and there are surely other ways to test mediciines and cosmetics arent there its no bloody excuse.
btw im a strict vegetarian and i believe in animal rights so there

Pet food — tested on animals?! I’m aghast!

  33. Anonymous on 10 Nov 2009 at 15:24 #

I am doing a project on stoppping animal testing, and your blog has been very helpful with many points on both sides .. however i have to say animal testing is useless !
Animals are NOT humans, ya they are living creatures however everything about them makes them an individual creatue especially compared to humans.
Its time to allow technology to take their place and allow them to live a life they deserve.
CONSIDER .. they were here first - i think they should have a few rights of their own.

  34. Radhi on 24 Mar 2010 at 4:42 #

    Carl,
Thanks for giving eye opening information on the animal testing. I definitely agree with you. How many different products do we need for a given need? We are having a lot of different products, just because there are a lot of businesses competing each other to put forth their products and capture the markets or profits. Other wise, there would not be that many products; we do not need that many different products. Now, I see Matt’s point of betterment of old products by experiments. But my question to Matt is how many times they are trying to improve the quality of product versus bring up new product to sell their own product more than other companies? In this competition of gaining market/profits, numerous companies are trying for the same thing, but in different ways…But, then how much torture is resulting in this process and is it necessary? Matt also mentioned that, “if there are other easy approaches, the companies would adopt them only for testing”. But consider, these are business companies, they look for profit, if other tests are more expensive than the animal test, the companies choose animal testing only. But would they reduce the price of product accordingly? I know you are right in your argument that all the medication we need for our survival involves similar animal testing, I agree with you. But what we need to consider is a compromise…While completely avoiding animal testing may not be possible, but we definitely should eliminate as much as possible. Animal testing should be the last resort and it should be for the life saving of human beings. I definitely oppose animal testing for fancy products that are not part of basic survival.

I also welcome comments on my thoughts. I may learn something new from all of you. Thank you.
